چکیده

Unsteady helicopter rotor aerodynamics are complicated. This paper reviews some of the fundamentals and newer developments of unsteady helicopter aerodynamics. Rotor flow is beautiful and complex. Visualizing rotor flow allows for an appreciation of the following theories and solution attempts as well as nature’s complexities. The flow through a helicopter rotor with forward motion is shown in Figure 1. The rotor is rotating horizontally along the right hand side. Notice the regular rake inlet and the regular rotational outlet! The next photo, Figure 2, shows a full size helicopter flying through five smoke streams. Once again, the regular inlet is transformed to a rotating flow field. This paper will discuss four areas of unsteady helicopter rotor aerodynamics. First, this paper discusses the classical harmonic solutions to rotational aerodynamics and their relationship to the fundamental Theodorsen solution. Second, modern solution techniques are discussed. Finally, the paper describes wake interactions and their noise production implications.

Improved Mathematical Model for Helicopters Flight Dynamics Applications

The purpose of this paper is concerned with the mathematical model development issues, necessary for a better prediction of dynamic responses of articulated rotor helicopters. The methodology is laid out based on mathematical model development for an articulated rotor helicopters, using the theories of aeroelastisity, finite element and the time domain compressible unsteady aerodynamics. The he...

Coupled CFD/CSD Analysis of a Hovering Rotor Using High Fidelity Unsteady Aerodynamics and a Geometrically Exact Rotor Blade Analysis

Abstract: This paper presents a combination of a computational structural dynamics (CSD) and high fidelity unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Regarding a helicopter in hover, aerodynamic loads are computed from the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver in overlapped grids, and blade motions are obtained from the geometrically exact rotor beam analysis. To couple those analys...

Helicopter Rotor Design Using a Time-Spectral and Adjoint-Based Method

A time-spectral and adjoint-based optimization procedure that is particularly efficient for the analysis and shape design of helicopter rotors is developed. The time-spectral method is a fast and accurate algorithm to simulate periodic, unsteady flows by transforming them to a steady-state analysis using a Fourier spectral derivative temporal operator. An accompanying steady-state adjoint formu...

Helicopter Rotor Airloads Prediction Using CFD and Flight Test Measurement in Hover Flight

An implicit unsteady upwind solver including a mesh motion approach was applied to simulate a helicopter including body, main rotor and tail rotor in hover flight. The discretization was based on a second order finite volume approach with fluxes given by the Roeand#39;s scheme. Discretization of Geometric Conservation Laws (GCL) was devised in such a way that the three-dimensional flows on arbi...

Rotary-Wing Aeroelasticity: Current Status and Future Trends

Concise Perspective and Previous Surveys W HEN reviewing research in rotary-wing aeroelasticity (RWA), it is important to mention a few historical facts. The Wright brothers flew in 1903, and Sikorsky built and started flying the first operational helicopter, the R-4 or (VS-316), in 1942. The R-4 was a three-bladed helicopter with a rotor diameter of 11.6 m and was powered by a 185-hp engine. T...
